This week’s friends are cellist Domenica Romagni and guitarist Mark Harris from Philadelphia’s own Bitter Bloom. We played some great tunes I’d never played before, like Quit That Tickling Me and Brown Button Shoes, as well as an original that just might be the crookedest tune I’ve ever played.

Peter Mawanga (Traditional Music from Malawi) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I have a really special friend this week: Peter Mawanga! Peter is a long-time collaborator with former Get Up in the Cool guest Andrew Finn Magill, and when they were on their way through Philly, Finn recommended I get Peter in front of a mic. I was really nervous about it, because Peter is from Malawi, and African rhythms, in general, are way outside my comfort zone. I profoundly don’t understand them. But Peter was lovely and patient and disarming, and he spoon fed me all the polyrhythms.

Tunes we’ll play:
Samala (Original Malawian Song)
Chigule (Original Gule Wamkulu Dance)
Nanga Iwe (What About You) (Traditional Malawian Hymn)
Lost Indian (Featuring Peter on Sansi)
Seneca Square Dance (Featuring Peter on Talking Drum)

Devin Forest-Hines (Easy to Hear, Hard to Play) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Devin Forest-Hines, with special guest friend Amelia Baker on guitar. We recorded this in Portland before the Old Time Gathering, about a month and a half ago. Devin chose some really neat tunes for our jam, and I’m pretty sure I’ll keep some of them, especially his version of Shady Grove, which we play towards the end. That’s not clickbait-style rhetoric, I actually liked that tune the best out of all the tunes we played, it just happens to be second to last.

Tunes we’ll play:
Cotton Eyed Joe
Trouble on the Mind
Brad Walters
Laurel Lonesome
Shady Grove
I Don’t Love Nobody
Bonus Track: Flatwoods

Hunter Walker (Dulcimer Ambassador) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Hunter Walker from Long Point String Band, with special guest guitarist and also friend Brian Bell! Hunter plays the mountain dulcimer, an instrument I haven’t had much exposure to, so… I’m probably not qualified to say this, but I think he’s probably the best. I heard him play for the first time the night before we recorded this and I had an immediate, physically emotional reaction. The man’s music is breathtaking. And when it’s not breathtaking, it’s super fun and clever. I'm excited for you all to hear it!

Tunes we’ll play:
Hangman’s Reel
Shelvin’ Rock
Marlboro County
So Sang the Mountain
Maysville

Agnes Brogeby, Erling Bronsberg, Kristian Herner, Lydia Malmqvist (My New Swedish Pals) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I have a lot of friends this week! Agnes Brogeby, Erling Bronsberg, Lydia Malmqvist, and Kristian Herner, from the bands The Rockridge Brothers, Six String Yada, and Friendly Neighborhood Stringband. And they’re all from Sweden! This session was thrown together pretty last minute, late in the week during Clifftop, but it was exactly what I needed after a week of pretty cerebral interviews and tunes. We basically played a bunch of Old Time song chestnuts, and we had a blast.

Tunes we’ll play:
Train on the Island
Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key
Katie Dear
Walk Along John to Kansas
Gospel Plow
Bonus Track: The Strike Song from Pajala

Lucas Pasley (First Hand Tunes) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I’m really excited for you to hear my interview with this week’s friend, Lucas Pasley, because Lucas has a real, personal connection to this music, and it’s rare to interview someone who studied so close to the source. Also joining us is Kilby Spencer on guitar, who’s been on the show a few times before; he’s the one who set me up with a whole bunch of interviews, including this one, and hosted me when I came down to Crumpler, NC last spring. Thanks again, Kilby!

Make sure to stick around after the interview to hear about Lucas’ new album and find out how to support Get Up in the Cool and get access to exclusive bonus content. Here’s my jam and chat with Lucas Pasley; enjoy!

Craig Edwards (Feed Your Loa) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Craig Edwards! We recorded this interview at the Harry Smith Frolic at the tail end of a thunderstorm, which I maintain is one of my favorite settings for recording this show. Craig is a musician who thinks about this music as much as he plays it, which, if this isn’t your first Get Up in the Cool episode, you know I really appreciate. He tells some great stories about hanging out with Ernie Carpenter and Clyde Davenport and watching the Birchfields play, all while emanating this energy of gratitude and respect, which I found pretty contagious.

Tunes we’ll play:
Shelvin’ Rock
Natchez Under the Hill
Cousin Sally Brown
Rowdy Blues
Sleepy Eyed John
Jaybird Died of Pertussis
Bonus Track: Sweet Milk and Peaches

Welcome to episode 50 of Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. That’s right! 50 episodes! Technically 53, but 3 of those are rebroadcasts or best of episodes, so they don’t count. And who better to feature on Get Up in the Cool’s 50th episode than Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains, experts in the field of traditional Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas fiddle tunes, fantastic visual artists, and, perhaps, Old Time’s cutest couple.

Tunes we’ll play:

Big Springs
Miller Boy
Kash Kersey
Cotton Eyed Joe

Palmer and Greg Loux (Old Time Power Couple/Run of the Mill String Band) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friends are Palmer and Greg Loux from Run of the Mill String Band! I got to know them at my first clifftop back in 2014, when I gave their son’s friend a ride and ended up camping with them. I remember sitting in on a jam with them and not being able to keep up. Palmer has a taste for notey melodies with less internal repetition than your typical old time tune. Basically kryptonite for a banjo player like me who likes to match a fiddler note for note. Fortunately, she gave me the tunes in advance; so I had quite the homework session preparing for this interview. And I still play a lot of these tunes, especially this first one: Flowers of Edinburgh, which is beautiful and very interesting, and in the process of learning it, I think I became a better banjo player and old time musician in general.

Make sure and stick around after the interview to find out where Palmer and Greg are playing next and how to order all their CDs and download all their music. Also, details on how to support Get Up in the Cool and get access to exclusive, members-only content like this week’s bonus track, Blue River, which is one of the best bonus tracks yet featured on the show. You gotta hear it.

Let’s get started! Here’s my interview and jam with Palmer and Greg Loux; enjoy!

Wagoner Hornpipe
Horseshoe Bend
Hell Up Coal Holler
Eye of the Beholder

Ethan Hawkins (If You're Not Having Fun, You're Not Doing it Right) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool, Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is one of my favorite flat-pickers, songwriters, and old time musicians, Ethan Hawkins. I met him at Mt. Airy a couple years ago, and immediately got a big ol’ crush on him. He’s a very good guitarist, with a dreamy voice, and he’s a very animated performer, so I’m really glad I got him on video. Oh, did I not mention that? Check out Get Up in the Cool's Facebook page and you'll find some videos from this episode.

Tunes we'll play:
Josie-O
New Harbor
How’s Your Family Been? (what’s the official title?)

Spencer Family and Friends (Living Links to the Source) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This episode features a lot of my new friends! Thornton, Emily and Kilby Spencer, Kelly Brieding and Debbie Bramer. Kilby Spencer reached out to me a while back with some recommendations for guests, so I crashed at his and Kelly’s place in Crumpler, North Carolina, and he lined up some amazing guests for me, including Shohei Tsutsumi, whose episode aired last week.

Before my trip, I hadn’t heard a lot of this style of fiddling and banjo playing, so I was pretty blown away when we got started. I’m used to playing this nonspecific, northern, festival-style, so let’s just say I expended a lot effort trying to keep up with these folks. Unfortunately, because there were six of us playing in a living room, this episode was a little more difficult to mix than the average one-on-one session. You only really notice it on a couple songs were the vocals get a bit lost. I hope the energy of the jam makes up for it

Tunes we’ll play:
Sugar hill
Johnson boys
Lost Indian
Eighth of January
Stagger Lee
John Brown’s Dream
