Seth Swingle (Old Banjo Tunes in Rare Tunings) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This is a very special episode of Get Up in the Cool, because my guest is Seth Swingle. We recorded this interview at Clifftop last year, very late in the festival. Seth was actually my eighth recording that week, so when he said he wanted to showcase solo banjo music in weird tunings, I said, so you mean I don’t have to learn any tunes? I can just sit and listen to you??? I was very excited.

Tunes we’ll play
Shortenin’ Bread
Lost Gander
Buck Creek Gals
Grigsby’s Hornpipe
Whoop ‘Em Up Cindy
Rye Whiskey
Bonus Track: Rebels’ Raid

Ethan Hawkins (If You're Not Having Fun, You're Not Doing it Right) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool, Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is one of my favorite flat-pickers, songwriters, and old time musicians, Ethan Hawkins. I met him at Mt. Airy a couple years ago, and immediately got a big ol’ crush on him. He’s a very good guitarist, with a dreamy voice, and he’s a very animated performer, so I’m really glad I got him on video. Oh, did I not mention that? Check out Get Up in the Cool's Facebook page and you'll find some videos from this episode.

Tunes we'll play:
Josie-O
New Harbor
How’s Your Family Been? (what’s the official title?)
Winderslide
Greasy Coat
Road to Malvern
Bonus Track: Grigsby’s Hornpipe

We talk about what led him to do so, as well as the thriving Bluegrass and Old Time scene in Japan. Also, Dave Wood, the academic program director of Shohei’s program, joins us on guitar.

Chris Dalnodar (Ragtime Apologist) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is fiddler Chris Dalnodar, and he brought with him a very serious topic: people should learn to play rags at old time jams and not be afraid of flat keys. And, you guys, I think he makes a pretty compelling case.

‎Ludvig Drevfjäll (Old Time Infatuation) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is the award winning clawhammer banjoist, old time fanatic, and fiddler, ‎Ludvig Drevfjäll. I’m really glad I had the opportunity to ask him about his story, because usually when we get together, we get straight to banjo playing and there’s not a lot of talking.

Jody Kruskal (Old Time Concertina) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is concertinist Jody Kruskal. If you don't know what a concertina is, that's normal—Jody will explain everything, just know that you're in for treat. Jody Kruskal is definitely one of my favorite people to play with; when I’m wandering around at night at the festivals I listen for that unique quality that only jams with concertinas can have; it’s like you meeting a german hiker on the appalachian trail; foreign but compatible.

Brad Kolodner (New Takes on Old Tunes) by Cameron DeWhitt

Part One in the "Baltimore Boys" series, wherein I jam with the friends (and tenants) of Brad Kolodner. We discuss growing up in the household of hammered-dulcimer titan, Ken Kolodner, and play some of their best modern takes on traditional tunes. This episode features three clawhammer banjo duets, which you don't hear everyday (hopefully). There's an exciting tension to these recordings; lining up bum-diddies (the basic clawhammer stroke) is no easy task. But I think we made something special, and I hope you agree. Also, I found out Brad's a straight-up DJ! Dude's pro in an interview; I've got a lot to learn.

Recorded at Brad's Place in 2016
