Spencer Family and Friends (Living Links to the Source) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This episode features a lot of my new friends! Thornton, Emily and Kilby Spencer, Kelly Brieding and Debbie Bramer. Kilby Spencer reached out to me a while back with some recommendations for guests, so I crashed at his and Kelly’s place in Crumpler, North Carolina, and he lined up some amazing guests for me, including Shohei Tsutsumi, whose episode aired last week.

Before my trip, I hadn’t heard a lot of this style of fiddling and banjo playing, so I was pretty blown away when we got started. I’m used to playing this nonspecific, northern, festival-style, so let’s just say I expended a lot effort trying to keep up with these folks. Unfortunately, because there were six of us playing in a living room, this episode was a little more difficult to mix than the average one-on-one session. You only really notice it on a couple songs were the vocals get a bit lost. I hope the energy of the jam makes up for it

Tunes we’ll play:
Sugar hill
Johnson boys
Lost Indian
Eighth of January
Stagger Lee
John Brown’s Dream

Nikos Pappas (Kentucky Fiddling) by Cameron DeWhitt

UPDATE:

This episode was recorded at the Appalachian String Band Festival in August 2016 and released on October 12, 2016. In July 2017 Pappas pled guilty to charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. In November 2017 he was sentenced to serve six years in federal prison.

The rest of the show notes are the complete original post from October 12, 2016. His album Lost in the Lowlands has been removed from June Appal Recordings; the link no longer works.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend was named Kentucky Master Fiddle Player by The National Endowment of the Arts, and I’m real proud to have him on the show. His name is Nikos Pappas, and he’s got trills for days. Also, he’s got his PhD in Musicology and Ethnomusicology, so by the end of this episode, you’ll know what a “negative tropism” is and how to use it in your day to day life. But, academic as he is, Nikos has a very earnest love for this music and its history; you can hear it in his playing and his stories. You’re really going to like this one.

Brian Slattery (I learned this tune from...) by Cameron DeWhitt

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool, episode 6, wherein I jam and chat with renaissance man Brian Slattery. I really love the theme of this episode: Brian doesn’t learn old time tunes from source recordings, so he chose tunes that he learned from specific people, in person. In a way, Brian is more old time than my nerdiest guests (God bless them); his sources are all relational. Also, he lets the folk process do its work; Brian likes to say that he isn’t “precious” about “what the tune is.”

Big thanks to Harry Bolick and Pat Schories for hosting this episode at their beautiful home and feeding us wonderful food. Stick around after the interview for details on how to support the show and get access to this week’s bonus track: another tune from my jam with Brian and Harry with the ever-so-quaint title: Rats Gone to Rest.

Brad Kolodner (New Takes on Old Tunes) by Cameron DeWhitt

Part One in the "Baltimore Boys" series, wherein I jam with the friends (and tenants) of Brad Kolodner. We discuss growing up in the household of hammered-dulcimer titan, Ken Kolodner, and play some of their best modern takes on traditional tunes. This episode features three clawhammer banjo duets, which you don't hear everyday (hopefully). There's an exciting tension to these recordings; lining up bum-diddies (the basic clawhammer stroke) is no easy task. But I think we made something special, and I hope you agree. Also, I found out Brad's a straight-up DJ! Dude's pro in an interview; I've got a lot to learn.

Recorded at Brad's Place in 2016
